My blog on WarCraft. In chronological order.

2002-07

When WarCraft III was released on 2002-07-03 Wed, I hopped online without reading the manual or practicing. I got into a 3v3 game as the Undead. I didn't even know how to collect wood! Needless to say I was totally slaughtered. I pretty much switched from playing StarCraft to playing WarCraft shortly after the release.

I'm going to basically scrap most of my WarCraft section. The specifics of WC are still evolving so any notes on stuff like unit costs, hit points, and basic strategies are pretty much useless. For that kind of information, you might as well go to the official Battle.net. In that light I'm converting my WarCraft section to primarily a pseudo-blog or diary with just a few notes.

I love the recent change to AMM (Anonymous MatchMaking). The estimated wait time is no longer shown but the wait times are much shorter. Also instead of matching via level, the matching is done via a more complex estimate of skill, so now I'm playing against players level 30+. For months the highest level I had achieved was level 12, but when I had started on the new AMM, I was level 10 and in just a few days of playing, I got to level 14 (just today). The level of play has been such that I don't think I've peaked yet.

So for Random Team 4v4 games (which is what I mostly play), I am in the top 6.580% on Azeroth, the east coast server, which has 189,076 players. FYI, level 19+ is top 2%, level 22 is top 1%, and the 1000th spot on the ladder for Random Team is level 25 (which is the top 0.4%). Here are my latest stats:

   Wins   Losses   Win %
Random: 67 70 48.91 %
Human: 6 12 33.33 %
Orc: 19 21 47.50 %
Undead: 365 402 47.59 %
Night Elf: 5 0 100.00 %
Total: 462 505 47.78 %

For a few weeks I played mostly random, but for the new AMM I've been playing as the Undead. Here is my current build order:

From there I'm basically doing a Dark Knight with Crypt Fiends. I upgrade the Necropolis to a Halls of the Dead after 1 or 2 Fiends depending on the pace of the game. I'll make a 2nd Crypt so it finished in time with the HotD so I can simultaneously upgrade the Fiend's Burrow and Web abilities. Then I'll make 1-2 Slaughterhouses and a Sacrificial Pit for Shades. Lately I've been ringing my hall with Ziggurats while placing my initial buildings just outside of this ring. The intent is to have the Ghouls clear out the trees in the rear of the base for the later buildings (Slaughterhouses, Sacrificial Pits, etc.).

My goal is to have a Death Knight (balanced on all spells), a Crypt Lord (focusing on Impale and Spiked Carapace), and around 5+ fiends in Control Group #1, and  around 3+ Obsidian Statues in Control Group #2. For longer games, I'll also get a Dread Lord (balanced on all spells). If the game goes long and I have 2+ mines going on, then I'll make some Meat Wagons too (for Control Group #2). For really long and high resource games, then I'll make Frost Wyrms (in Ctrl #1).

I should try tossing a few Banshees in for Curse (in Ctrl #2). I should also try making a 2nd Graveyard for making upgrades in parallel in later in longer games.

Whoo hoo! Last night I became Level 15 for the 1st time ever. So for Random 4v4 on Azeroth, the east coast server, that puts me in with the top 9,915 out of 188,075, i.e. the top 5.244%. The top 2% is still Level 19+, and the top 1% is still Level 22+, and the 1000th spot on the ladder for Random Team is level 25 (which is the top 0.393%). Here are my latest stats:

   Wins   Losses   Win %
Random: 67 70 48.91 %
Human: 6 12 33.33 %
Orc: 19 21 47.50 %
Undead: 376 419 47.30 %
Night Elf: 5 0 100.00 %
Total: 473 522 47.54 %

I see that Battle.net reset the competition ladders. This makes a lot of sense since a ladder should be used to determine the better players for a season, instead of "all time". I also hope that they've fixed their ladder calculations because it did seem that my ladder experience points kept rising (with no end in sight) even though my win ration was less than 50%. I was at Level 16 before they reset the ladder.
